About
Familia Libre was born in June 2006 as an informative Web page for parents and educators that offers encouragement for breastfeeding and respectful care of children world wide. To assist parents, we also offer an online shop with products that support these values.
When I returned to Ecuador from Japan after finishing my master’s degree in Urban Geography, I found that the work opportunities for a mother with a small child required too many hours of separation and provided little or no consideration for the breastfeeding relationship and mother/child bonding.
My experience as a mother and foreign student in Japan enabled me to discover the possibility of combining intellectual work, everyday tasks, and the respectful care of my son. This discovery encouraged me to look for work that would satisfy my interests, allow me to work from home, and enable me to take total responsibility for my role as a mother.
As an urban geographer, I have a special interest in the way children interact within the city as well as the roles of parents, educators, schools, and every element of the society in children’s lives. My objective is to go beyond the parents to create social interest regarding the importance of respect in our relationships with children. Therefore, I consider that our respect for them should be evident in the products that are sold, in the written materials, in our daily conversations and in the way the city and the society are structured.
During the time that Familia Libre has been online, I have been invited to talks and radio interviews, and have also received many e-mails. All of them have provided a means for understanding the opinions, experiences, and doubts of people in different cultures, social strata, and professions. I use this permanent feedback as the reference to direct the Web page growth and the product selection. However, the best experience and main reference for my work at Familia Libre has been the daily exchange with my son.
